I was required to use three pre-selected words and write a story around those words. The definitions of the words must be made clear in the text of the story. |

Miss Emma Gets Her Way
Miss Emma Gets Her Way -- and why shouldn't she? She's been living in Old Mill all her life. She's the oldest person in Old Mill and everybody just loves her. But when Miss Emma goes to the town library and can't find a single new book, something has to be done. Lucky for Miss Emma, Meg overhears her say, "What this town needs is more books!" Meg also loves to read and she couldn't agree more. The next day, with the help of Meg's teacher and her friends, Meg hangs flyers all over Old Mill. BOOK FAIR! BOOK FAIR! BOOK FAIR! Meg couldn't wait for the fair. Neither could Miss Emma, and together they greeted everyone at the gate. Funny clown balloons and silly hats, hot dogs and ice cream, tug-of-war games and wishing wells all brought the coins pouring in. Coins that would fulfill Miss Emma's wish, and coins that would fill the Old Mill Library with new books. |

A Star Wish
Have you ever wished upon a star? Wished for a new doll or wished to stay in the bubble bath forever and ever? Wished you never had to eat spinach, or liver, or anchovies or wished for a million dollars . . . maybe two? I don't know . . . do wishes come true? It's fun to think about. But the year of the drought, everyone was wishing - Ma and Pa, Mr. John and Mr. Hank. They were all worried about the corn and they were wishing for just one thing . . . RAIN! But the rain didn't come. The grass was brown. But the rain didn't come. Twigs snapped. But the rain didn't come. Maybe if I wished harder, my star wishes would work. MAYBE! Maybe it would rain. |

Never Going to Grow Up
"Grow up! Grow up!" groaned Matt. "Everyone wants me to grow up. I'll never grow up!" he said. Sound familiar? Maybe Matt saw too many Peter Pan movies when he was little. But CAREER DAY was coming in Ms. Barker's class and everyone had to report on what they would like to do when they grew up. Jenny wanted to be a librarian. Sam decided a scientist, just like his dad, would be a good career for him. Matt said if he had to grow up, he'd be a pirate. But when he saw Ms. Barker frown, he tried to convince her by waving his imaginary sword in the air. Ms. Barker would have none of it. She wasn't impressed. However, she did think, given Matt's "interest" in the sea, that he should learn about being a shipwright. After all, Peter Pan and Captain Hook needed to know about ships. And . . . so would Matt. "A shipwright? What's a shipwright?" asked Matt. |
